A beta version of MIDAS Sound System 0.6 for DJGPP has been released. As
usual, it can be downloaded at the MIDAS web site,
http://kalahari.ton.tut.fi/s2/midas/. The release is only intended for
experienced DJGPP users, and includes only DJGPP support.
Essentially everything that works with Watcom C in DOS is supported here,
but some parts of the system may be a bit unstable still. In particular,
the DOS timer code is somewhat suspicious (and therefore cycles strange
colors in the borders - if it crashes, mail me the border color :) Also,
we don't lock any of the memory we use, even though most of it gets used
in the timer interrupt. Everything seems to work OK, both under DOS
(cwsdpi) and Win95, but this still isn't good practise. Any ideas on how
to easily lock all memory used?
Anyway, if you feel brave, and know your DJGPP well, grab the release,
hack around, and let me know how well it works. You'll need the excellent
Allegro library by Shawn Hargreaves, at least version 2.11 works. _DON'T_
mail me asking what Allegro is, where to get it, or how to compile it --
if you don't know, don't bother with DJGPP MIDAS yet...
My thanks must go to Shawn Hargreaves for Allegro, this DJGPP port
wouldn't exist without his IRQ handling code. Also thanks to everybody who
requested this - active user base is something that DJGPP really excels
in. Finally, thanks to DJ Delorie and the whole DJGPP crew.
