Had similar trouble on my Trident TVGA 9440 with Univbe loaded:
the Univbe VESA 2.0 LFB modes resulted in reboots.
Autodetecting resulted in Vesa 2.0 LFB modes being selected, and
the program crashing or rebooting.
Non linear VESA 2.0 modes worked perfectly.
