That's not an 'misfeature' but a 'feature'. When
the 'Use tabs' option is not activated, the typing
of the TAB-key will result in inserting so many
space as you have defined as your tabsize. An read
Tab (0x09) is inserted only when the option is 
enabled. (But remember, the use of real tabs will
cause sometimes problems, because the handling of them
is not so easy).
