This is true. Even SBOS (which works in protected mode) fails when
using allegro for some reason.  If you need sound in the mean time you
can use SB05_DJ2 by Joel Hunter. It doesn't support the GUS or MIDI
(but does support MOD) but at least you can use SBOS to get Sound
Blaster(v 1.0 22KHZ :( ) emulation. You might also try MikMod 2.09bd.
I havn't tried this one yet but it might work... You can get these off
of  the djgpp games resource page at
