How about this:

redir -e temp.err djtar -x -p -o /dir/subdir/file archive.tar >temp.dat

I think you've caused a lot of trouble by redirecting both stdout and 
stderr to the same file, when there's no need for this.

None.  Do you really want your precious sources to be quitely dumped to 
Kingdom Come?
