Have you tried Univbe (or the new one, sdd {but I haven't tried that})? 
It defines several low-res modes, including:
320x200, 320x240, 320x400,
360x200, 360x240, 360x400,
640x350.

(Note:  These modes are VESA modes, and are in addition to the higher res
modes such as 640x480 and higher).

Anyways, you might want to try it out and see if that helps.
