Chances are good that MS put that error message in there with the explicit
function of making people gunshy of other DOS's than MS.  Keep in mind
that this happened before (and probably ignited) the investigation by the
FTC into MS's os group mingling info with the applications group.  It's
really a moot point today.  I understand your annoyance at some people
that are freaked by MS's practices, but can you really blame them?
