Sounds like a bug :-)

What graphics and soundcards do you have? When you run test.exe in
640x480 mode with the driver set to autodetect, which graphics card does
it pick? (this is displayed in the middle of the screen). And when you
run play.exe with a single .wav file as the command line argument, which
sound drivers does it pick?
