There's an unfinished socket API implementation based on WatTCP. DJ
Delorie mentioned it in one of his articles. Dan Hedlund's code
demonstrates how to interface with the WSOCK.VXD in DOS-programs
running in a Windows DOS-box.

Just a few more notes about the WSOCK.VXD interface: 

- it does not "export" socket database functions. I.e. no
gethostbyname(), gethostbyaddr(). So you either need to know the
numeric IP address or write the resolver functions yourself. 

- before you write a resolver, there's also the problem of getting the
domain name server (and other relevant data) for the current RAS
connection. That can be rather tricky. There are several options for
doing this, one of them is hoping  that the ISP server has a BOOTP or
DHCP server running.
