Is it only because EMX needs a.out support?  Or are there any other 
reasons?

Btw, the version of bash that you are using (from SimTel.NET) has a bug in
here documents: it fails if the text upto EOF is longer than 512 bytes
(don't laugh!).  You can get a later version (where that bug is corrected) 
from one of these URLs:

I was able to run GNU autoconfigure scripts with the latest version, 
after a few minor patches to the script.
