Disabling protection would defeat the purpose of using a protected
mode environment, but there are a few ways around it.  Section 18.4 of
the FAQ begins the discussion of accessing conventional memory.

You can use dosmemget(), dosmemput(), _farpeekb(), _farpokeb(),
_farpeekw(), _farpokew(), _farpeekl(), _farpokel(), and a few others.
