You are exactly right. I did mix the versions. Reason for this 
 was that I followed the guidelines related with 'which files to
download' as mentioned in the chapter 4 of faq202. Though, this 
chapter has a warning suggesting that versions mentioned below may not
 be latest, I thought that latest versions I could download later. For
the time being , I was more interested in installing djgpp and didn't
mind installing a bit old version of it. The versios I downloaded from
a ftp site previously(not simtel), had bnu272b etc. and this tallied 
well with the versions mentioned in faq. In other words, versions 
mentioned in faq  give 'cannot exec go32' problem. If chapter 4 of
faq is really the source of this type of error than I think it can be 
corrected and chances of such errors can be minimised. The lesson I have
learned is 'always go for latest':)
