I am running Windows NT 4.0 on a Pentium 166. I have been unable to
open a file for reading when the filename is long, i.e., not in the
usual 8.3 format. The DJGPP FAQ has the following to say about it:

> Note that the long filename API for DOS box is not supported by
> current versions of Win/NT, so you cannot have long filenames there.
> (There is a rumor that the new version 4.0 of WinNT will support the
> LFN API, but I'm told that at least the current beta versions still
> don't.)

I can definitely see long filenames in the DOS box; it's just that my
C programs do not work with the long names. Is this a correct
assessment? Is there any way around it? The reason I ask is that I
am porting some Unix programs to DOS, and many of the filenames are
long.
