First, the Watcom -Compiler is not that expensive. Secondly, it depends on what you want to do. It is right that Watcom has its problems. But on the other hand it is capable of compiling the STL -Library, Windows-Programms and Excpetionhandling. GCC does not currently Support these features properly. If you don not need this, get yourself DJGPP. DJGPP also has many more tools that make it worth getting it anyway.
