to my knowledge, Quake was developed under IRIX (the SVR4 UNIX of Silicon
Graphics boxes) then ported to DOS using DJGPP later.. simply because SGI
boxes were the fastest they could get at the time (imagine doing lots of
compile/edit cycles and you'd be glad to have a fast machine..)
