The FAQ cannot be a treatise on optimizations, because the effect of each 
optimization switch depend *heavily* on the program.  As I've said 
elsewhere, -O3 can make your program slower than -O2 (it surely makes it 
larger), and I have real-world programs to prove this.  Explaining all 
these intricacies will make a good book, not a FAQ.
