as far as i know installhigh has been around at least since 6.0, give it
a try. iam using 6.22, and i load everything, including the mouse
driver, smartdrv and mscdex using installhigh. saves a few Kb. by the
way, you cannot use memmaker to optimize your setup if you use install
vs device and lh.

did you try changing the size of the environment you give to bash ?
