Just how big do you want?

The library I use (mine) supports images as big as you can fit in
memory, which would be about 4096x4096 on my machine.

But it sounds like you want to use a tile-based background.  What you'll
need to do is store a bunch of tiles somewhere, and the background will
be a grid of numbers representing which tiles go where.  Then you just
create the tile background in real time, drawing from the large tile map
to a smaller screen buffer.
