As far as the compiler is concerned, case _does_ matter. foo.C is a C++ 
file whereas foo.c is a C file, to mention only one case. RHIDE must 
preserve this; otherwise the wrong compiler may be invoked.

I think it is _less_ troublesome if the OS preserves the case of filenames...
