I don't want to spoil the sheer fun of this thread (really!) but Shawn
"Mr Allegro" Hargreaves says he spells it "pallete" because that's how
the makers of his old Amiga (?) C compiler spelt it. They were 
Americans, I believe, and as everyone knows, Americans can't spell.
"No, son, that's wrong; it should be POTATOE." 
That's why they invented C, so they wouldn't have to remember so much.

(Of course this theory falls flat on its face if the Amiga compiler was British)
