Emacs is available for far more OSs that Unix. I use it under Dos, Win95
and OS/2 as well as under Linux for example. Having exactly the same
editor for each platform makes like so much easier.

I'm sure not a UNIX Guru, but Emacs and I get on real well.  I don't
want to get into the usual "editor war", it's just that your
statements are not based on fact. Emacs is not just for Unix, it's
very powerful and is just as easy to use as any other editor.

However, either of those editors are free software.
