What version of Windows is that?  If it's Win95, please try to set LFN=n 
in the environment from the DOS prompt.

And what do you mean by ``DOS shell''?  Does this mean a DOS box under 
Windows (like the MSDOS icon of the Main group in Win3.x), or do you use 
something else?
