It happened to a lot of people, that's why it's in the DJGPP FAQ list.  
The FAQ has a few sections in chapter 15 that discuss memory issues and 
explain the problems that you are experiencing.  Please download the file 
v2/faq200b.zip from the same place you get DJGPP and read chapter 15.
