someone pointed me to the djgpp faq (the 2.0 version) which has a bunch
of info on this problem -- i've been playing with asm386.sed, but it doesn't
seem like it's really up to the task, and it sounds like gas may not be
a robust enough assembler for my purposes anyway.

the djgpp faq mentioned using MASM 6.11 to emit coff output -- has anyone
tried this successfully?
