`data' is originally Latin (plural of `datum'), meaning "(things) that have
been given"; `datus' is the passive past participle of `do' = "I give". Hence
the old aggro about whether "the data is" or "the data are" is correct. I
suppose that `dayta' versus `datta' is yet another UK/USA pronunciation
difference like `tomahto' v. `tomayto'.
