What to do about stupid, off-topic posts to your favourite newsgroup.

The first thing NOT to do is to respond to the newsgroup.

I repeat, do NOT respond to the newsgroup. The original message was bad 
enough - starting an irrelevant thread (like this one :-) just makes matters 
worse.

The best thing to do is to MAIL a reply to the perpetrator, complaining 
about their post. Personally, I always make it reasonably polite, and quite 
short.

If anyone does this more than once (or if I'm feeling _particularly_ 
annoyed), I also mail their postmaster, including the HEADER of the 
offending post (and just enough of the body to indicate the kind of post it 
is), asking them _very_politely_ if they can do something about it.

This is usually not necessary, as the postmaster has already noticed their 
mail machine grinding to a halt processing a million messages of complaint 
from all over the Net, and terminated the perpetrator's account :-)
