LZW (Lempel Ziv Welch) is patented by Unisys, since the Welch guy was an
employee of Sperry when he developed LZW and Sperry is a predecessor of Unisys
in some way.
LZ was developed in 77 and 78 by people at IBM and I think IBM has patents for
this but, the LZ+Huffman variants used in lharc and zip/gzip seem to be
unaffected by this (or maybe the patent has expired).
