Well, you are right, you have to edit the file 'dir.txi' (or maybe dir.tex),
there you put gdb somewhere in between some others, using the same
syntax, for ex.: * GNUdebug: (gdb).       GNU project Debugger
                              ^^^basename of gdb-info-file(s)
Execute: 'makeinfo dir.txi'
and a new 'dir.inf', or just 'dir' will be created. if you now have both,
delete/rename the eldest.

if you don't have dir.txi (could also be dir.tex) you have to edit dir(.inf)
directly.
