I think most people following the situation regard simtel.net (Walnut
Creek) as the new "real" simtel. Certainly as far as I'm concerned, the
"real" simtel is wherever Keith Petersen is: Keith has run the simtel
archives since day one, when he established them as a spare-time project
on some old Army hardware called wsmr-20.simtel.mil (if memory serves).
Keith is unwilling to say much about what happened, but it appears
that he had a falling-out with his recent employers at Coast to Coast,
and is now working for Walnut Creek. CTC seems to be trying to keep up
their archives, but they have not shown the ability or commitment to do
a decent job of it. Keith is doing his usual fine job at simtel.net,
and although he has a lot of holes currently in the reconstituted
"simtel" archives at simtel.net, those holes are being filled in quickly
as software authors find out about the situation and send in the latest
versions of their code.
I think the freeware/shareware community ought to support Keith in
this situation; he's been paying his dues for *years* by doing
archive admin gruntwork, and we ought to acknowledge that effort.
CTC put some money into simtel support over the last couple years,
but they have nowhere near as much claim on the community's loyalty.

Good, I'm glad to hear that. Not having djgpp would be a big hole in
Keith's new archives.

PS: comp.archives.msdos.d has more discussion of this, although
I think most of it may have expired at most sites.
