It's not that simple, because GIF is a rather complicated format. 
IIRC, you can use 16, 256 or true color modes, include several 
pictures in one file, compress data, determine whether scan lines 
should be stored sequentially or somewhat scrambled (making for a 
possible overview when downloading on a slow connection, before all 
of the image has arrived- notice some GIFs on the Web), etc.

But, if that helps, I've written a software bundle called bmp_conv, 
and uploaded it to x2ftp.oulu.fi in some djgppv2-directory. It 
converts BMP-files (which are by far easier to handle) for use with 
the XLib library, but it should be comparatively easy to port for 
GRX. You may want to give it a shot.
