Another solution is to merely truncate the filenames (not the extensions).
That is, longfilename.c should become longfile.c.  Most DOS applications will
merely silently truncate the filename similarly in open requests (including
DJGPP, as I've found), and will not cause a problem.

At least, this works in DJGPP 1.x.  I would imagine that it hasn't changed in
2.0.
