Subject: When is `if(0){..................}' not compiled?

  If I write this:-

inline int ml(int Z=0,int Y=0,int X=0,int W=0){ ....
    if(!Z) ------;
    else if(!Y) -------;
    else if(!X) -------;
    else if(!W) -------;}
/*-----*/
main(){   ml(5);}

  when can I trust that (on compiling a call oif the inline function) djgpp
won't compile the if() alternatives that work out as if(0) on substituting the
arguments on expanding?
