Small question,   HUGE answer...

X refers to X windows,  the cross platform window management system.  Its
big,  its powerful,  and there is a lot more you can say about it.  Have
a look in the *.x-windows.* newsgroups for more info.  X is available for
many *nix systems including Linux.
