   Hi,

   I would like to know if there is a way to tell gdb, that the name of a 
   source file is e.g foo.cxx instead of foo.cc.

You might try:

#line 1 "foo.cxx"

At the top of the file.  This should generate debug filename and line number 
records when compile with '-g'.
