I can only speak from personal experiences, but yes... gcc is faster than
most.  Watcom is neck and neck though.

The way the runtime environment is setup often has more influence 
on the speed of your code than the compiler optimization.

Watcom w/ the pmodew extender is the fastest combination, mostly due to
most of the exceptions pointing to iretd's.

DJGPP w/ DPMI is IMHO much more stable, although graphic access runs at a 
snails pace under 2.0.
