What does your GO32 environment variable says?  You should try this:

	set GO32=gw 800 gh 600 nc 256

If your card indeed supports VESA, it should work.  If not, try loading 
the UNIVBE program which will make it VESA-compatible.  It's all 
explained in the DJGPP FAQ list (available as faq102.zip from the same 
place you get DJGPP).
