I've considered that option in the past, then decided against it.  The 
problem is that, unfortunately, in our imperfect world somebody will 
answer the flame publicly anyway, perhaps with more flames.  So I thought 
if a reply to the flamer could be posted which calms things down and 
redirects the discussion to more constructive tone, those additional 
flames could be avoided.  I don't know if it actually works, but I sure 
try...

I can only say ``Hear-hear!'' to DJ's other recommendations.
