Subject: Simple C or C++ speech synthesizer wanted

  Please: has anyone out there got a simple speech-sound synthesis program or
routine (needing a PC with a reasonable speaker, not necessarily a Sound
Blaster), that I could use to get any Gnu C++ program to say words as desired
on the speaker? I don't mind if I have to use phonetic spelling, e.g.:-
    speak("dhi^z thri^ angglz ad @p t@ mo^ dh AT n thri^ siksti digri^z");
  If you have merely a way of getting the speaker to make each speech phoneme,
I can string those together to make a speech routine enough for my needs. I
searched my local program archive (PDSOFT in Lancaster in England) in vain.
  Failing that, how please at least can I make my speaker produce a
multi-frequency sound whose frequency x[i] Hertz component has volume y[i]?
