This remains a big hurdle indeed. I had to keep tweaking my memory
configuration to get past this one. 

I'd heartily recommend that you give 19.29 a try. There is one small
glitch, a declaration conflict in gmalloc.c (just comment out the
faulty declaration, it from an unused function) and you'll find you're
far better off. Some annoying bugs are fixed, most notably the
`extended character bug'.
