The C-Snippets stuff (found on SimTel in the C dir I believe, in
snip????.zip) has a wrapper library that helps check the
integrity of dynamic memory. It check for blocks free'd twice
(which can also cause this problem), overuns, and other things.
It's written by the person who wrote the Symantec C compiler, and
was used to check it for memory leaks.

Also, I believe that the malloc that comes with djgpp is the
standard BSD malloc, which is fairly simple. The Gnu version of
malloc (found on prep.ai.mit.edu) has a runtime debug mode that
should be useful (however, I think it it LGPLed, so you have to
check that out before distributing binaries that use it).
