Officially, I use zip.  In this case, the use or tar.gz has two
effects:

(1) They're smaller but a significant amount, and since I save ALL of
them, that's important.

(2) It makes it more obvious that they're for people who know what
they're doing, and not the average user who might not be able to
handle the alpha nature properly (no insults intended).
