    I've been waiting for _someone else_ to mention 4DOS !

   I think it solves many of the sh needs without going too far astray.
   I didn't want to polute the mail-list with the obvious.

I am a big fan of 4DOS.  However, it is nowhere near sufficient to
handle recursive makes (GNU textutil, fileutil, elm, etc, etc) without
massive transformations to the makefiles, and it does have severe
command line-length limitations by Unix makefile standards (Ghostcript
3.32-beta, for example, in its command line form, would have a
250-word, 2400-byte link command---I guess that's too big for most
unix shells too, but you see the point).
