If you need general keyboard and screen I/O, why not use 'curses' ? 
This works well on Unix (and other) platforms.
For DJGPP, you can use PDCurses 2.2 (in 'pdc22bn.zip').

If you need serial I/O, you can use the ASYNC package ('aeasy102.zip').
This is ofcourse MS-DOS specific. Also it still needs a DPMI cleanup.
