I think the reason for the change in default behavior was speed.
Apparently it goes much faster because extra parsing isn't
necessary.

I *believe* this is configurable with a change to the specs file,
but I can't seem to remember what it is.  If someone checks up on
it, mebbe DJ could put that in the FAQ, or mebbe change the specs
files supplied with the next release to be backwards compat.
