I'll throw my tuppence worth into the editor debate, which, to be honest, is
already getting a bit tiresome :-o

Have you come across NotGNU? It's like a very slimmed down emacs (ie, mere
mortals like me can learn how to use it, and can run it on our weedy PCs), but
the major benefit for me is that I can use virtually the same editor under
unix, DOS and Windoze. It doesn't do anything clever about C indenting, let
alone syntax colouring, but I find it'll do most of what I want.
