In a non-unix style, you can try Sword library. With it you will be able
to open overlapping windows, dialogs with buttons, check-boxes, to create
application with multi-language support, dithered-16M colors in all 
graphics mode (even 16 and 256 colors one)...

You will find it by ftp at : omnigate.clarkson.edu
                             /pub/msdos/djgpp/pub/sword.arj

If you don't already have it, the arj.exe archiver is in the same directory.
