My initial impression was that something (DOS 5 EMM386?) had put it
in V86 mode w/o VCPI, but that wouldn't explain its failure to work
after booting clean.  Suggestion:  Get a program like infoplus or snooper
which determines system configuration and see if it reports anything odd.
(If you aren't sure, run it at home as a control...might as well anyway,
as the results are often somewhat interesting.)
