I'll second that suggestion.  Certainly "how do I redirect error messages to
a file?" is one of the most common questions on this list.  And once you have
such a utility, isn't an option to redirection stderr and stdout to different
places a trivial enhancement?  How about a tee option?  Seeing error messages
on screen as they are generated and sending them to a file would be nice, but
I think that is harder.  I know there are utilities which do this, but I've
never seen them in source form, so I'm not sure just how they work or whether
they work in all environments.
