Is memory allignment an important concept?

If I want to blit a bitmap to a RAM screen buffer, I would imagine that
doing it 32 bits at a time is a good idea. (I'm using 8 bits per pixel)
Would this be bad if the long words were not properly alligned?
Is it better to just move bytes?
Is there a way to fix this?
