Subject: libc.a index

Hi,

CAUTION: If you do not have much time, take a look at the end of
this message! The rest is my point of view about TeXing!

at the weekend I tried to TeX the libc.a docs. emTeX failed because
running out of TeX memory (save size = 1000 or something). bigTeX and
TeX386 (also from the emTeX package) failed too.
So I switched over to my AMIGA and compiled with a package
called TeX3141Kit and suceeded!
Now, not everyone will have an AMIGA or a UNIX machine to try
another TeX package and Aaron Ucko suggested that gTeX will work an a
PC. I will get gtex to find this out.

Btw. if i did not know that I must run makeref in djgpp\docs\djgpp
for getting libc2.tex and did not know that I must run plain tex for
libc.tex it will be a _real_ pain to get a printout from libc.a.
I prefer using LaTeX instead of Word for Windows or other commercial
text processing packages because LaTeX is free and there are existing
version for nearly all computers. But DOS users often have problem
with TeX (now mouse no WYSIWIG no menus and bars ...) so why not help
them with a small entry in the FAQ. Just three or four sentences which
explain what you must do to get a _complete_ printout (see below) of
libc.a.

So now I have libc.dvi (in A4 format produced with the command
'@afourformat' or something) but the index is missing. The file
libc.cp is empty! In the TeXInfo doc it is said (in my own words) to

1.) run TeX (will create a .cp file)
2.) run the .cp file through makeindex
3.) run TeX again

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Question: What did I wrong when after step 1.) the .cp is empty ?!?
How can I get the index for libc.a

I know that this was asked a few weeks ago, but I lost the answer.
Can anyone help me out?

Thanks in advance,

Armin
